Sheriff: Man stole lemons, battery from orchard

TAFT, Calif. - A Taft man was arrested in connection to theft from a lemon orchard.

On Jan. 7 at about 8:30 p.m. Sheriff's deputies responded to a lemon orchard owned by Paramount Citrus Company, located at Highway 166 and Old River Road.

Deputies found 55-year-old Jose Pena of Taft was in the process of stealing lemons and loading them into his vehicle, officials said.

Deputies found about 250 pounds of stolen lemons inside Pena's truck, officials said.

Also inside the vehicle was an industrial-type battery which had been stolen from a wind machine located in the same lemon orchard, officials said.

Pena was arrested and found to be in possession of methamphetamine, officials said.

Pena was booked at the Taft City Jail for Grand Theft, Possession of Stolen Property, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
