MCFARLAND, Calif. - Kern County Sheriff's homicide detectives said two people were shot and killed in McFarland, Tuesday night.
The shooting happened at 11:00 p.m. in the 31000 block of Sherwood Avenue. When deputies arrived, they found multiple gunshot victims.
The victims -- identified as Fernando Valdez Jr., 28, and Fernando Valdez Sr., 53, -- were transported to local hospitals. Valdez Jr. died at Delano Regional Medical Center, and Valdez Sr. died early Wednesday morning at an unidentified hospital.
Family members told investigators a masked gunman kick in the front door to the home and shot the father-son pair.
Family and friends are no remembering the family, who they describe as hard working.
"The dad is always working, just trying to make it better for his kids and his family. He was just trying to make it like everyone else," said Robert Awnallah, a family friend.
Debbie Banducci, who worked with Valdez Jr. at Remax, also described the son as a hard worker.
"He had a number of deals already going and his clients really liked him," said Banducci.
According to Valdez's brother, the wife and 18-year-old daughter were at the home during the incident.
He said the younger Valdez recently asked his cousin to accompany him on a real estate deal, because he was afraid to go alone.
The brother said detectives are currently interviewing the cousin to see if there is a connection.
No arrests have been made, and no motive for the shooting has been identified.
