BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Kern County Sheriff's Department deputies said California Highway Patrol Officer Denny Drummond was found shot dead on a Bakersfield street Thursday evening.
At about 11:30 p.m., deputies said they received reports that a person was screaming in the 2700 block of Karla Street.
Deputies said they found 42-year-old Drummond lying in the roadway with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Drummond was taken to Kern Medical Center for treatment. He was pronounced dead several hours later.
Detectives said that Drummond was an off duty California Highway Patrol officer and he had been at the Lone Oak Lounge on Rosedale Highway shortly before the shooting.
Officials said Drummond’s vehicle was parked in the roadway near where his body was found.
A handgun believed used in the shooting was found inside the vehicle.
The vehicle and handgun were seized as evidence.
An autopsy was performed on Friday and Drummond’s cause and manner of death are pending further investigation.
Detectives are attempting to determine the circumstances surrounding what led up to the shooting and how the shooting occurred.
