Should charges be filed against man who fired warning shot to man breaking into neighbor's home?

Attorney's with the District Attorney's office are investigating whether or not to press charges against a man who fired warning shots in order to stop a burglary at his neighbor's home Tuesday morning.

Neighbors in the Northeast Bakersfield neighborhood said they are siding with the man instead of law enforcement no matter what the outcome.

“They would have stripped the house completely of everything that was in there, but that was stopped because of what he did,” said O.J. Droppers who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years.

Deputies are still investigating the situation and said it will be up to the District Attorney’s office to file charges.

Attorney's with the District Attorney’s office would not comment specifically about the case, but said in cases like this, they need to determine whether the shots were fired in self-defense in order to move forward.
