SR178 reopened, near Bakersfield side of Kern Canyon, after crash

2 people with minor and 2 with major injuries

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - SR 178 is now opened, CHP officials announced, after a collision occurred between four cars east bound of the mouth of the Kern canyon, Thursday. 

At about 2:15 p.m., on Sept. 12, officers with the California Highway Patrol went to SR 178 regarding a car crash.

When officers arrived, they said they found a semi and van had crashed head on, on SR178, just east of Old Kern Canyon Road.

According to CHP, the van had been driving eastbound on SR178 before hitting a Ford Crown Victoria, the driver then crashed with the semi and ended up hitting a third car. 

Four of the people involved in the crash were transported to Kern Medical Center.

CHP has listed the two people with minor injuries as Reynaldo Martinez, 45, of Bakersfield and Geraldine Fowler, 76, from Woford Heights. James Fowler, 81, and Kimberly Fowler, 43, of Woford heights were reported to have sustained major injuries. 

One person involved in the crash was having trouble breathing and life flight was requested, CHP officials said.

SR178 was closed for three and a half hours.
