Stay Focused Ministries helps at-risk youth before new school year begins

Backpacks, music, ice cream and more at event

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - School's not yet in session, but one local organization wants to make sure at-risk communities get all the tools they need to succeed.

Stay Focused Ministries held their annual backpack giveaway yesterday for children living at the Colony Square Apartments in the 1200 block of 40th Street in Bakersfield, which organizers say has a lot of gang and drug-related activity.

"We want to come and give them a message of hope," said Emanuel Carrizalez, the president and founder of Stay Focused Ministries. "[We want to help them] reach their goals and their dreams and tell them that education is their way out," Carrizalez said.

Stay Focused Ministries also had a mini carnival for the kids complete with games, ice cream, music and face painting.
