BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A new poll ranks California in the top 20 places with the worst drivers. The rankings are based on fatalities, drunk driving, careless driving and tickets.
The poll was conducted by carinsurancecomparison.com
"There are more cars on the road. We're driving faster and we're driving longer," said Jim Klabthor, spokesperson for Allstate Insurance.
The rankings are based on statistics pulled from several sources including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Motorists Association and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
"If we can keep our focus on just one thing, driving safety then everything else will take care of it. We'll get to where we belong. We'll get there safely and generally on time," he said.
With 1 being the best and 50 being the worst, California ranks 45 in careless driving and 43 in tickets.
Allstate Insurance hopes to change all that by showcasing its wide-screen, high-definition driving simulator to demonstrate to the community the dangers of distracted driving.
"If we become more focus behind the wheel, we automatically become more safer and everyone around us become more safer, too," said Klabthor.
DUI and driver license checkpoints, CHP officials say helps in keeping the roads safe. Research shows crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often.
"Check points go on through out the state and through the country and something that is important for everyone in California, but its also something that's important to everyone nationwide," said Sgt. Daniel Webb.
Drivers caught impaired can expect jail time, license suspended and insurance increases as well as fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that may exceed $10,000.
"We want the community to know that we are out looking for impaired drivers to ultimately keep the roadways safe for them to travel on," said Webb.
States with the safest, law-abiding drivers include Vermont, Utah and New Hampshire. The state that ranked number one for having bad drivers was Louisiana.
A second DUI check point is set for Saturday and will be conducted by Bakersfield Police Department.
