BAKERSFIELD, Calif - A man was shot and killed during a shootout with Sheriff's Deputies Thursday evening.
According to the Kern County Sheriff's Department, the incident began on the 1200 block of Wilson Rd.
They received a call of spousal abuse, but when deputies arrived, both the suspect and his girlfriend had left the scene.
Then, a few minutes later, they were called to a home on the 300 block of Belle Avenue to reports of shots fired.
Deputies tried to make contact with a man inside the home and that's when he fired several shots at them. 5 Deputies returned fire, injuring the man before he went back inside the home.
During a standoff that lasted several hours, investigators discovered the man inside the home was the same man from the spousal abuse call on Wilson Road.
The man's girlfriend told deputies that he had several firearms inside the home. At that point, deputies began to evacuate the surrounding neighborhood.
A crisis response team was called in to try and make contact with the suspect, but after more than two hours of silence, they went in and found the suspect dead.
The investigation is ongoing and the six deputies will be placed on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
Friday deputies identified the suspect as 51-year-old Darren Raines.
