Suspect of fatal Monterey hit and run accident arrested after anonymous tip

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Bakersfield Police Department received a call from an anonymous person, directing Officers to an apartment complex parking lot in the 1400 block of Oregon Street at about 8:36 p.m. Tuesday.

The caller said a vehicle was parked at that location, with what appeared to be recent damage and was possibly related to the fatal hit and run collision that occurred in the 1100 block of Monterey Street Monday night.

A 1990s white Hyundai sedan was seen fleeing after striking a pedestrian who later died.

On arrival at the apartment complex Tuesday, Officers were able to locate the vehicle and evidence consistent with it being the suspect vehicle which fled the scene of the fatal collision involving the pedestrian.

Officers contacted 20-year-old Mario Martinez of Bakersfield and determined he was the driver of the suspect vehicle at the time of the fatal collision, poilce said.

Martinez was arrested and booked into the Kern County Jail on suspicion of felony hit and run, vehicular manslaughter and unlicensed driver.

The investigation into this fatal collision is continuing.
