Suspect steals gardening truck, spilling equipment during a high speed chase through Bakersfield

Police catch carjacking suspect, find handgun

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - It began as a routine traffic stop and ended with a high speed chase involving a stolen gardening truck and trailer.

Bakersfield police say an off-duty officer tried to pull over a car on Truxtun Ave. around 7:30 Thursday morning, when the driver, identified as Philip Hildago, took off and crashed into a building a short distance away.

The passenger surrendered to police, but Hildago ran down a nearby alley.

A couple blocks away, Hildago jumped into a gardening truck with a trailer and sped away as one of the owners tried to stop him.  That person fell to the ground and suffered unknown injuries.

Police say Hildago led them on a chase through central Bakersfield, throwing gardening tools from the trailer into the road along the way.

The chase merged on to Hwy 99, and ended on Golden State Ave. when police say the truck broke down.

Investigators say a firearm was located in the alley where Hildago was seen running, and officers found ammunition consistent with the gun on him when he was arrested.

Hildago was arrested for felony evading, resisting arrest, carjacking, possession of a controlled substance, an ex-felon in possession of a firearm/ammunition and various other firearms related charges.

The passenger, Daniel Peck, 23, of Bakersfield was arrested for Violation of Probation.
