Man arrested in early-morning fatal Bakersfield crash; charged with DUI, manslaughter

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The intersection of Fairview Road and Monitor Street was closed early Friday morning due to a deadly head-on collision.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the accident happened at about 12:40 a.m.

Officers arrived and found that a GMC pickup truck had slammed into a Ford Fusion. The investigation revealed the driver of the pickup truck, Joseph Maine, 26 of Bakersfield, was traveling westbound on Fairview Road when he struck the Ford, which had been traveling northbound on Monitor Street.

A passenger in the Ford, identified as 25-year-old Vanessa Carillo died as a result of her injuries. The driver and an additional passenger of the Ford Fusion sustained moderate injuries.

Donny Youngblood with the Kern County Coroner's said that Carillo was pregnant when she died.

Joseph Maine was arrested on charges of driving under the influence causing injury and vehicular manslaughter.  The investigation is continuing.
