TAFT, Calif. -  

A Taft student was suspended from school after a series of threats through texts to another student, according to officials.

On Feb. 18, at 9:00 a.m., deputies from the Taft Substation began an investigation regarding cyber threats being made towards students at Lincoln Junior High School.

According to investigators, the threats were made via cell phone using a type of texting software. 

Officials said these threats included a list of eight Lincoln Junior High students, who the suspect said he intended to harm while they were at school.

The investigation led to the identification of a juvenile suspect, who was also a student at Lincoln Junior High, according to officials.

Deputies said they contacted the suspect and his parents, who fully cooperated in the investigation. 

Deputies interviewed the suspect who said he was playing a joke on his classmates by sending them the threatening text messages, according to reports.

Deputies said after investigating, the student has no access to firearms or evidence of an ongoing plan to harm his classmates.

Parents of the students listed by the suspect were contacted and briefed on the investigation, according to officials.

School officials said the suspect was suspended from Lincoln Junior High School and the case is being forwarded to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office Juvenile Division for review.
