Teacher at Independence High School is named People Magazine's Teacher of the year finalist

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A Bakersfield teacher is a finalist for a national award.

Kevin Crosby has been teaching for 12 years and says he enjoys teaching special education students because of their genuine desire to learn.

Now he has been nominated to be people magazines teacher of the year.

Crosby teaches autistic students at Independence High School.

Administration at the school nominated Crosby for his dedication to special education.

Crosby turns his students into teachers.

His falcon autistic solar team teaches other kids at the school about photosynthesis, electricity and green energy. 

Crosby says he is humbled to be one of six finalists for teacher of the year.

Voting started today and will last three weeks.

The winner will share a 5 thousand dollar donation with their school.

The winner will be featured in a fall issue of people magazine.
