Tehachapi awarded grant to fund School Resource Officer from police department

TEHACHAPI, Calif. - The City of Tehachapi had been awarded a federal hiring grant, according to Tehachapi Police Department officials.

Tehachapi was one of 39 cities and counties in California to receive awards under the 2013 COPS Hiring Program, which will result in the hiring of 105 additional law enforcement officers statewide.

The funding is being provided by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), which is within the U.S. Department of Justice.

Tehachapi will receive $125,000 over a three year period to assist in the funding of a second School Resource Officer position in partnership with the Tehachapi Unified School District.

The new SRO position will allow TPD and Tehachapi Unified School District to provide enhanced security and services to the district's three elementary schools. It will also enable the current SRO to spend more time on individual case investigations involving the middle school and two high schools.

The TPD thanked the Tehachapi Unified School District, the Tehachapi Valley Parks & Recreation District, and the Tehachapi Collaborative for their support in seeking this grant. The TPD appreciated the support of Congressman Kevin McCarthy throughout the grant approval process.

The TPD has not yet received details on when the funds will become available. Once the department is ready to proceed on the grant, additional information will be released.
