SHAFTER, Calif. - The city of Shafter is celebrating its 100th birthday.
The Green Hotel was built in 1913 with the sole purpose to house men who were coming into the area to buy cattle and settle the land.
One hundred years later residents are still looking after the hotel as a symbol of pride in their community.
Pat Wilson is one of the hotel's directors
Wilson said many original artifacts have been preserved to teach future generations what it was like before today's modern technologies.
A century later nearly 17,000 people call Shafter home.
Cathy Prout is spearheading the Shafter Centennial Celebration that's slated for later this year.
Volunteers are making plans to honor the city's heritage and embrace the future.
