BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - One woman was killed and two others were hospitalized after an accident on Highway 99.

The California Highway Patrol said a truck was heading north on the highway towing a trailer when a tire flew off.

The tire jumped the median and hit the driver, identified as 40-year-old Souraya Sourayanezhad of Pasadena, Calif, of a blue Jeep traveling south on Highway 99.

Officers said after Sourayanezhad was hit, she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the guard rail.

Sourayanezhad died from the impact of the tire. The two passengers were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

CHP said the driver of the truck and trailer got off the highway at the next exit where officers talked to him about the accident.

Three lanes of the highway were shut down for about two hours while officers pieced together what happened.

All lanes of Highway 99 were reopened around 9:30 p.m.
