UPDATE: Army officer from Bakersfield stabilized after suicide bomber

Lt. Samuel Van Kopp taken off meds, improving

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -

Samuel Van Kopp is stabilized at Walter Reed Hospital after being critically wounded in a suicide bomb attack while on Army patrol in Afghanistan on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

Doctors have taken him out of the induced coma and they taken him off a ventilator and most medications.

Sunday morning was the first time Samuel partially realized that his family was in the hospital. He is only speaking a few words at a time.

On Monday he will go through a battery of testing from six different specialty areas.

There has been rumors through the social media that they will not remove the piece of shrapnel and that no permanent damage is likely.

This has not been confirmed, as the family said it only gives a better indication of the future and that the future looks much bright that days ago.
