Valley fever a health concern with strong winds and blowing dust

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The gusty winds and blowing dust throughout Kern County can cause serious health issues, including valley fever.

Although face masks can help prevent the inhalation of the spores that can cause valley fever, doctors say they are not 100 percent effective.

"Any breath could possibly cause a person to breath in the fungus," said Claudia Jonah from Kern County Public Health Service. Jonah advises to minimize your time spent outdoors during this type of weather.

It can only take a matter of minutes for you to inhale the fungal spores that cause valley fever, and all ages are at risk.

"Young, old, men, women, children, all those can be infected, we also have to recognize the importance of our pets being exposed," said Jonah.

Doctors say when conditions are like this outside, you should make sure you set your car's vents to circulate the air, keep the windows up, and keep your car clean.
