BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A portion of Golden State Highway, from F to Q streets was dedicated Saturday as the "Vernon P. Valenzuela Memorial Highway."
The highway passes in front of the Bakersfield Veterans Center that Valenzuela helped open in 2009.
Valenzuela passed away in March 2012, after living a life of dedication to other veterans.
He was born and raised in Kern County and enlisted in the army. Valenzuela was deployed to Vietnam and he received a Purple Heart.
After returning home to Kern County, be trained to become a therapist, focusing on veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
