BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Volunteers are planning to spend part of their weekend cleaning up trash near the Kern River.

The Chester Bridge over the Kern River is a high traffic area and that leads to a lot of trash.

It’s not hard to see all the litter around and under the Chester Bridge.

A lot of the garbage that collects around the bridge ends up in the river.

Saturday there will be a big effort to clean this area up with the help of Keep Bakersfield Beautiful and Varner Brothers Incorporated.

Varner Brothers will provide trucks and other material to help in the clean up.

It’s all part of an effort to improve the city's image.

Sanders said litter is usually more visible in the winter because there is less vegetation.

If you would like to help, the city says you can just show up at the Chester Avenue Bridge at 8 a.m. Saturday.
