Waitresses help customer get back on his feet

Man lost leg in motorcycle accident

OILDALE, Calif. -
Some employees at Kelly’s Café in Oildale have started a collection for one of their customers who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident last year.

"One person alone cannot do it, but together we can raise enough money. That's my hope, I just want everybody to drive by and drop off $1. Come in and say hello. Let’s get him a leg," said Linda Williford, server at Kelly's Cafe.

Darrell Houchin went to the cafe a few times for their home-style cooking. Williford asked about his injuries.  Houchin said he needs a prosthetic leg so he can get his life back to normal.

Williford said God placed Houchin on her heart to make a difference in his life.  Williford, along with Colleen Engle, another server put the word out about the collection.

"It's been a big blessing for me and my whole family. We appreciate their efforts," said Houchin.

Houchin lost his leg in a motorcycle accident last September in downtown Bakersfield. The other driver did not have auto insurance and Houchin's insurance did not cover the cost for the prosthetic leg.

"The out pouring of love they have showed us towards my husband has really touched my heart," said Sheila Houchin.

Since they started the fundraiser last week, they have raised more than $200. The cost of the prosthetic leg is $16,000. Williford said, they are not going to stop until they make a difference.

The waitresses have added their tip money and customers and dropped in their extra cash.

"When I was sitting there watching them put money into the jar, it was pretty overwhelming," said Houchin.

The staff will be out in front of the restaurant Saturday morning collecting donations between 8:00 a.m. and noon. Kelly's Cafe is located at 300 Norris Road.
