Wasco State Prison riot leaves one prisoner dead, two others injured

Riot is under investigation

WASCO, Calif. - One person is dead and two are seriously injured after a prison riot broke out this morning.

On June 3, at about 9:30 a.m., a prison riot involving about 40 inmates broke out inside Facility A exercise yard at Wasco State Prison-Reception Center.

Correctional officers said they fired one round from the mini-14 rifle to quell the disturbance.

Three inmates are said to have suffered serious injuries and were taken to a local hospital. One of the three 22-year-old Angel Torres was pronounced dead at about 10 a.m. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The caue of death is currently unknown.

No staff members were injured during this incident.

The WSP-RC Investigative Services Unit will investigate the cause of the riot. Facility A was place on lockdown pending further investigation.
