BAKERSFIELD - The California Highway Patrol received a call about a truck that had gone over the side of Golden State Highway and landed in the Kern River bed.
Firefighters had to use a bike path to get to the crash scene.
CHP says the driver of the welding truck went over the bridge on Golden State Highway between Airport Drive and F Street.
Firefighters say the driver was ejected and was taken to the hospital with major injuries.
"I believe I heard a crash and he flies off and lands through the tree and it flips and he flips out of the car and into the tree and lands on the ground unconscious," witness Joshua Lay described the scene.
The CHP is investigating and is not certain at this time if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash.
