BUENA VISTA MUSEUM PALEO DIGS
Today is your chance to be a paleontologist for a day with the Buena Vista Museum of Natural History and Science. If you are a member or become a member you can join the museum field guides on an adventure to the quarries near Shark Tooth Hill. The cost is $85 for the day. "THE AFRICAN QUEEN"
The Maya Cinemas is showing "The African Queen" today at 10 a.m. The 1951 film stars Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. Tickets are $6.
BAKERSFIELD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra is hosting their performance of "Verdi Requiem" and it starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Rabobank Theater. It features the combined voices of the Bakersfield Master Corral and the CSUB singers. Tickets start at $20 and are available at the Rabobank Box Office.
2014 PLAYWRIGHT'S FESTIVAL
The 2014 Playwright's Festival is at the Beekay Theater in Tehachapi and features eight, 10 minute plays that start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.50. The Beekay Theater is located at 110 South Green Street in Tehachapi.
CBB GALA AND GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Comprehensive Bllod and Cancer Center will have its annual CBCC Foundation Golf Tournament and Gala benefiting the children of Kern County. The event will take place today at 6:00 p.m. at the home of Naina and Ravi Patel. The golf tournament will take place Monday, March 17 at Seven Oaks Country Club with registration and lunch at 10:30 a.m. Shotgun starts at 12 noon.
LUCK OF THE SPLASH DOGS COMPETITION
The nationally recognized dog enthusiast company will have the competition today from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Kern County Fairgrounds. Tickets are $15 for adults, and children 12 and under are free of charge.
KERN COUNTY RACEWAY PARK OPEN HOUSE
The Kern County Raceway Park will have an open house and open testing of vehicles today from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event is free of charge.
The Bakersfield Speedway will showcase modified cars, spots mods, street stocks, NMRAs modlites and mini-dwarfs today starting at 4:00 p.m. The race itself will take place at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $12; seniors and people with military IDs can get in for only $10, $5 for ages 6 through 12 and children under 5 are admission-free.
MET OPERA: "WERTHER"
The Bakersfield Metropolitan Opera will perform Jules Massenet's "Werther" at Edwards Cinema today from 10:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Tickets are $24.
The NAACP Awards will be taking place today starting at 6:00 p.m. at Hodel's. Motivational speaker Danny Morrison will be in attendance, music will be provided by Big Sax. Tickets are $55, $100 for couples.
ST. PATRICK'S DINNER
St. Malachy's Roman Catholic Church will host a St. Patrick's Dinner tonight from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Cost of the event is $8, and tickets may be purchased at the door.
BOXES, BAGS AND BOWLS
If you're looking to learn new ideas for gift-giving, the Standard School House at the Kern County Museum is there to help. They'll also be giving hors d'oeuvres, sparkling wine, juices and a special treat. Tickets are $60 per person.
Ken Nishiyama will discuss his experience about living in a Japanese internment camp in Topaz, Utah during World War II today at 1 p.m. at Minter Field in Shafter. The event is free of charge.
"BYE, BYE BIRDIE"
Stockdale High School students will perform the musical "Bye, bye Birdie," today at 2:00 p.m. General admission is $10, $8 for students, $7 for students with an ASB card, seniors, and children under the age of 12.
"LIFE UPON A WICKED STAGE"
"Life Upon a Wicked Stage" will be performed at The Spotlight Theater today at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children.
WRITERS OF KERN CONFERENCE
The 2014 Writers of Kern Annual Spring Conference will feature three outstanding speakers regarding books and blogging. Tickets are $30, $20 for members.

Covenant Community Services will be collecting new and gently used books for the students from 7 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The book drive will be located at 17000 N. Chester Ave.

The Bakersfield Racquet Club is hosting USTA Pro-Circuit with the three way Chevrolet Cadillac Bakersfield Tennis Open. Admission is free.
