Woman wants winnings from Internet Cafe, says she is owed $2,500

Owner says she didn't have proper identification

BAKERSFIELD, Ca. - Esther Escalente says she was playing her weekly casino games at Shocker's Internet Cafe at the Golden Valley Mall on F Street when won $2,500 dollars.

"That would have been quite a bit for me," she recalls.

However, when it was time to claim her winnings the manager at the cafe refused to pay her out.

The manager, Phillip Walker is also the founder of the Internet Cafe Association of California.  He tells 23ABC that he didn't pay Escalente because she did not show proof of valid identification.

"About 46% of people that participate in Internet Cafes don't have IDs," Walker says.  "It's the same thing as Bank of America.  If you don't have proper ID they're not going to let you cash a check."

Escalente  tells 23ABC that she did in fact have her driver's license on her, but the manager never asked her for it.  He instead just turned off her computer and denied her pay out.
