Master Plan To Tackle Gang Violence Released

Bakersfield, Kern County Leaders Outline Plan

City and county leaders have outlined their master plan to tackle gang violence in Bakersfield and Kern County.

The report, released to ABC23 News by Supervisor Michael Rubio’s office, details the three-pronged Prevention, Intervention and Suppression strategy.

Prevention efforts listed in the report include more funding for education programs. Intervention efforts include involving community and faith-based organizations to help fight gang violence.

Suppression methods requested include creating a Target Gang Unit within the Kern County District Attorney’s Office and more involvement by law enforcement.

The plan highlights the recent surge of gang activity, noting that in 2006, there were 14 gang-related homicides in Bakersfield and another 10 across Kern County, accounting for more than 40 percent of the 57 homicides overall.

Officials will convene on March 19 to discuss the plan.
