Mesa Marin, the NASCAR-style race track east of Bakersfield, will close and be demolished this fall after nearly three decades of racing. Marion Collins, the track founder, said he has sold the land the track sits on to a developer, who plans to build homes on the site. Collins declined to name the developer.
Collins said, after 28 years, it is time for his family to slow down. The annual "October Classic" will be the last race at the track. Mesa Marin, dubbed "the fastest half-mile oval on the West Coast", has hosted its own racing series along with several car and truck races featuring NASCAR drivers.
Collins also announced Wednesday that NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick will race in this year's "October Classic." Harvick is a native of Bakersfield.
