The day is finally here! Today, certain young people across the nation will start submitting applications to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for the deferred action program. Its been two months since Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano released the June 15th memo announcing that young people who arrived in the United States as children may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years and be eligible for work authorization.
The opening day for deferred action applications is an exciting one, but we need to make sure we prepare and advise our community with accurate information, said Diana Tellefson Torres, Executive Director of the UFW Foundation. Since July, the UFW Foundation has hosted a series of informational sessions to educate individuals on the requirements for deferred action. To ensure that immigrant communities and farm worker families receive accurate and honest information for the application process, the UFW Foundation will continue to host educational sessions and application workshops on deferred action throughout various cities in California, Arizona, Easter Oregon and the Yakima Valley in the state of Washington.
Under the new policy, people younger than 31 who arrived in the United States before the age of 16, pose no criminal or security threat, are in school, completed school or served in the military, can apply for deferred action and apply for work permits. Participants must also prove they have been living in the country continuously for at least five years. We invite you to attend a UFW Foundation informational session to learn all the requirements as guidelines apply on a case by case basis.
The application fee is $465 and will fund the administrative costs of the program, including a biometric check and the work-authorization form.
The UFW Foundation is a Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) recognized organization that offers immigration legal services to low-income families in California and Arizona. As a BIA accredited organization, the UFW Foundation will be providing services in processing applications for deferred action to qualified individuals.
As individuals prepare for the application process the UFW Foundation reminds applicants to beware of notaries notarios or other service providers who are not authorized to provide legal immigration advice. Please visit our website to be up to date with the latest changes to immigration and check out the calendar of events for deferred action events.
