New NASCAR Track Gets Green Flag

The Kern County planning commission gave the "greenlight" to a planned NASCAR raceway near Bakersfield.

The raceway will be built on an 85-acre parcel of farmland near Interstate 5 and Highway 43, by a local family familiar with racing.

Marion Collins and son Larry owned the Mesa Marin Raceway in northeast Bakersfield, but sold it to land developers and torn down in 2005.

Collins family members are touting the half-mile tri-oval track as a "state of the art" facility, complete with a drag racing strip and family playground.

Builders hope to have the track ready by the spring of 2008.
