After 28 years, the Collins family closed Mesa Marin in October. Less than two months later, they have announced they are planning on building a new, state of the art track off Interstate 5.
They, along with the Destefani family, will be building a new half-mile, tri-oval raceway located at I-5 and Highway 43.
Larry Collins said when his family announced the closure of Mesa Marin, they had no clue they would get back into the business.
What's different with this raceway is that its not all about motor sports.
The Collins and Destefani families are working on a name for the new Raceway, in the meantime, it is being referred to as "Kern County's new home to NASCAR."
They are planning to break ground in March and be open for the 2007 season.
The new track will hold 5,000 fans, with room for expansion. They are also hoping to bring back the NASCAR truck series-- which got its start right here in Bakersfield.
