DENVER - Despite growing concerns about a popular children's toy, Fisher-Price has yet to take action or issue a recall.
Investigator Keli Rabon broke the story of the burn risk associated with the Soothe & Glow Seahorse, which is a top seller for toddlers on Amazon. Since then, more than 1.5 million people have viewed the post on the Denver Channel Facebook Page alone, and parents across the United States and internationally are now taking a closer look at their children's toys.
Some of them told investigators when they inspected the battery compartment on the Soothe & Glow Seahorse, they found the coils were already burned -- or the batteries had leaked.
Others have defended the toy, saying they have had no problems and won't part with it despite the concerns.
Fisher-Price was contacted several times in the days since the initial investigation aired, but the company has refused to respond. Multiple phone calls and emails before the story aired were met with a statement that acknowledged "a very small percentage of consumers … have experienced an issue with this product" but answered no questions about what caused the problems, or what the company planned to do to fix it.
Investigators found that when responding to concerned parents online, Fisher-Price wrote, "In the products that have been returned to us, we have no confirmed reports of a fire" and "We'd never do anything to compromise children's safety."
The company's refusal to provide more details to consumers or investigators has left parents wondering what has to happen before Fisher-Price considers a recall.
Before the initial investigation aired, the Consumer Product Safety Commission told investigators that companies are required to report any complaints about products that represent a "substantial hazard" to the public -- but that the company is allowed to decide what qualifies as "substantial." After the story aired, Rabon checked again -- and the CPSC told her while it is aware of the complaints and issues involving the toy, it can neither confirm nor deny any investigation into the Soothe & Glow Seahorse.
