DURANGO, Colo. - A puppy shot with a crossbow bolt is recovering in Colorado.

The 3-month old Jack Russell/Shepherd mix puppy was found in Shiprock, New Mexico, with a crossbow bolt still in his hind leg.

A crossbow bolt is like an arrow. It's shorter, but just as lethal, said La Plata County Humane Society spokesperson Jonelle Jones.

The Farmington Animal Shelter surgically removed the bolt and put the puppy in a foster home to help socialize him since he was traumatized by the incident.

The puppy, now named Bow, was transferred to the La Plata County Humane Society in Durango.

Wednesday, Bow had surgery again to be neutered. Thursday, he'll be available for adoption.

“Once I heard about Bow I knew it’d be an easy adoption and we also want to help out the Farmington Shelter as much as we can since they’re always full” said Chris Nelson, the Director of Animal Services in Durango.

The person who shot Bow has not been found and officials said they don't have any leads.
