BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The work on 85-year-old Herbert Jackson's home continues with full force.
Today the house is fully gutted. When the work is completed, Jackson will be living in a fully updated home.
"I just thought I needed a patch job, but they gave me an almost brand-new house," said Jackson.
Last week county code compliance condemned the home, forcing the elderly man out on the street. 23ABC News was the first to report Jackson's plight.
Dozens of volunteers, community groups and politicians came to his aid.
"I don't deserve all this attention, but people in the community came to help me out," said Jackson.
On Friday volunteers were installing insulation and putting up drywall.
Community advocate Audrey Chavez, has worked with County supervisor Lericia Perez, Sen. Andy Vidak's office to organize the teams of volunteers, the list of needs for repair and the work that needed to be done.
"Everybody came together for this man. It could've been my dad, it could've been your dad, but it's one of our community members and we have to advocate for our elderly," said Chavez.
Next, volunteers will be putting in new floors, painting, installing large appliances, a new shower, sinks and toilets, along with a heater and a swamp cooler.
After the work is completed, county code compliance officers will reinspect the home and remove the violation status.
