Parents at a middle school in Long Island, New York say officials have gone too far with a recent ban during recess, CNN reported.
Students at Weber Middle School in Port Washington, New York are no longer allowed to play with most balls including footballs, soccer balls and baseballs during recess. Officials said students can only use softer nerf balls instead.
The district said it is trying to keep kids safe.
"Some of these injuries can unintentionally become very serious. So we want to make sure our children have fun, but are also protected," Dr. Kathleen Maloney, superintendent of Port Washington Schools, said in a local television interview, according to CNN.
In addition, adults must supervise games such as tag and cartwheels to ensure that the kids do not hurt themselves.
