COMPTON, Calif. -

A suspect who went for a Los Angeles deputy's weapon during a Compton street fight has been shot to death.

Investigators say the deputy had stopped a 35-year-old pedestrian Wednesday evening and he suddenly ran away.

There was a brief foot chase before the suspect began fighting with the deputy and tried to grab the deputy's weapon.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld, was shot and he died at the scene.

The deputy has minor injuries.

The Sheriff's Department hasn't disclosed the reason for the initial stop.
