LAS VEGAS - An ex-convict from California is due before a Las Vegas judge on felony charges alleging he abducted and sexually assaulted a schoolgirl at knifepoint.
Richard Martin Schlacta is expected to get a defense attorney in the case that could get him life in prison if he's convicted.
Police say the 48-year-old Schlacta was arrested after the 13-year-old girl escaped during the Wednesday morning attack and flagged down a motorist passing a school east of the Las Vegas Strip.
The girl was treated for cuts on the arms and other injuries at University Medical Center.
Records show that Schlacta was released from California prison custody in June 2012.
He's accused of sexual assault of a child under 14, kidnapping of a minor, coercion and battery with a deadly weapon.
