Fresno area man arrested after golf club assault

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Fresno man after he assaulted his father with a golf club, threatened arriving deputies, and struck a Sheriff’s K-9 several times.  

On June 18, shortly before 11:30 p.m., when deputies went to the intersection of Shields & Chestnut regarding an assault with a deadly weapon call.

The man, later identified as 23-year-old Thomas had reportedly struck his father several times with the golf club during an argument.  Following the assault, Thomas fled on foot. 

Deputies arrived on scene and immediately confronted Thomas at the northeast corner of the intersection.  Thomas turned and threatened the deputy with the golf club at which time K-9 “Oka” was deployed.

Oka was able to apprehend the suspect, during which time Thomas struck the K-9 several times in the face and muzzle area.  Assisting deputies assisted in taking Thomas into custody.

The victim received minor injuries as a result of the attack.  He was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel.  K-9 Oka was not injured.

Thomas was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he was treated for dog bites he received during his apprehension.  He was later booked in to the Fresno County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, and willful harm to a law enforcement canine.
