Kettleman City toxic landfill was issued 72 violations for spills that went unreported

KETTLEMAN CITY, Calif. - A Central California hazardous waste dump with a history of fines now finds itself with another headache: the state has issued 72 violations for spills that went unreported.
The state Department of Toxic Substances Control has referred the case to the state Attorney General's Office for what it expects will be more "substantial fines being levied."
State officials said the spills since 2008 at Chemical Waste Management's Kettleman Hills landfill were relatively small, posed no health threats to the public and were contained on the property, but the company's operating permit requires that it notify the state.
Company officials could not be immediately reached. The landfill accepts substances such as carcinogenic PCBs, herbicides and other chemicals and lead-contaminated soil from cleanup sites.
