COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) -
An off-duty Costa Mesa police officer has died after his car smashed into a freeway support pillar.
City News Service says the car hit the concrete column beneath State Route 55 in Costa Mesa shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The driver was the only person in the car. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name hasn't been released.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
