SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -
A gunman apparently killed himself in a Santa Monica home after a standoff with police that lasted nearly 12 hours, authorities said.
SWAT team members fired tear gas and entered the home at around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, and they found the man dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said Lt. Robert Almada. Nobody else was hurt.
Coroner's officials told City News Service that John Carroll Lowery, 48, was found in a bedroom.
Police say Lowery had quarreled with his estranged wife before he took his 15-year-old son and 86-year-old mother-in-law hostage Tuesday. His wife wasn't home at the time.
The boy escaped and called 911.
Police surrounded the home at about 5 p.m., evacuated about a square block and tried to persuade Lowery to surrender.
Lowery's mother-in-law left the home some five hours later. Lowery's communication with police and negotiators ended at that point.
