Porterville man arrested on murder charges

Victim died of gunshot wounds in hospital

PORTERVILLE, Calif. - A man was arrested on murder charges this morning after a victim of gunshot wounds died in a hospital.

On August 25, at about 2:01 a.m., officers with the Porterville Police Department went to a home in the 200 block of E. Presidio, for the report of shots fired. 

As officers arrived on scene, they found a person suffering from several apparent gunshot wounds. 

The wounded person, identified as 31-year-old Wallace Varela, was taken to Sierra View District Hospital; however, he soon died as a result of his injuries. 

Porterville Police Detectives responded and assumed the investigation. 

During the course of the investigation, detectives identified the murder suspect as 22-year-old, John Moisa. 

On August 26, at about 7:30 a.m. detectives located Moisa at a home in the 600 block of North Oxford Street, where he was taken into custody without incident.  Moisa was booked into the custody of the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department on the charge of Murder, and he being held without bail.
