SAN DIEGO (AP) -

San Diego police say an apparently suicidal man has surrendered peacefully after a six-hour standoff with a SWAT team.

City News Service says a domestic violence report sent officers to an apartment in the Encanto neighborhood around midnight.

Officer Frank Cali says a man armed with some knives had punched his girlfriend and was holding her and two other women inside an apartment.

Cali says the man eventually let the women go and briefly stepped out of the apartment, where he threatened suicide and told officers to shoot him before ducking back inside.

Police say that after hours of conversation with police, the man surrendered at around 6 a.m. Thursday.
