The man who died after he skied off a trail in the Sierra National Forest and hit a tree stump has been identified.
Authorities say 49-year-old Richard Sigle of Fresno was coming down an intermediate run at China Peak Mountain Resort in Lakeshore on Saturday evening when he apparently failed to negotiate a turn and ended up in the woods. Both of his skis came off, and he hit a large tree stump.
Lakeshore is about 70 miles northeast of Fresno. Sigle was identified on Sunday.
Authorities say Sigle's helmet was cracked when rescuers came to his aid. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sigle was among a group of season-pass holders who were allowed to continue skiing after the resort closed on Saturday.
