SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Supervisor Leticia Perez has announced her candidacy for the 16th Senate District seat.

Perez released this statement: 

"I am running for State Senate. I am honored by all of the people who have asked me to do so. I recognize that other good people will step forward. The public will be well-served by a healthy debate on the direction of our state. Over the next weeks I will be outlining my positions on the issues. I intend to begin walking door-to-door next week to present myself to as many voters individually as is humanly possible."

Perez became the first Latina elected as supervisor after she beat out Karen Goh to take over Senator Michael Rubio's previous seat as the 5th District Kern County Supervisor in Dec. 2012.

A special election for the 16th Senate District of the State of California on July 23, 2013.

The primary for this special election will be held on May 21, 2013.

Michael Rubio recently stepped down from his state Senate seat so he could spend more time with his family.
