Crash Kills Man, Injures Wife, Daughter

Suspected Drunken Driving Crash Shuts Down Mt. Vernon Ave.

Mt. Vernon Avenue was shut down at Niles Ave after a crash killed a man and injured his wife and daughter.

The California Highway Patrol is reporting two trucks crashed just after 9 p.m., when a Chevy Avalanche was traveling at a high rate of speed when it slammed into the back of a Chevy Silverado that was stopped at a stoplight.

The CHP says the crash killed the driver of the Silverado, identified as Aurelio Esqueda, 32. Officers said he was not wearing his seat belt.

Officers said his wife and child were transported to Kern Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries.

They said the driver of the Avalanche only had minor injuries, with burns from the airbag deploying.

"We think alcohol is a contributing factor for the driver of the Chevy Avalanche, that's still under investigation right now at this time," said Sgt. Kenny Hagerman with the CHP.
