The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced new guidelines on Monday in requiring health insurance plans cover birth control and even abortion starting August 1 of this year.

Monsignor Swett at St. Philip The Apostle Church is speaking out against the policy.

"In essence it's saying you have to go contrary to what your moral beliefs are in order to be able to provide insurance for your employees since you’re servicing a public beyond your one faith community,” said Swett.

Catholic charities, universities and hospitals will also have to offer birth control under their health plans but religious institutions that don’t provide the option have until August 2013 to comply.

Even with the additional time local church officials claim this is a wrong move for the Obama administration especially on election year.

“What the purpose is in part of the administration is hard to determine, especially in election year because they are certainly going to hurt themselves with the Catholic vote. That was important to Obama in the last election,” said Swett.
