San Diego Chargers 2008 Training Camp Preview

(Sports Network) -

REPORT DATES: Rookies July 21st, Veterans July 25th

SITE: Chargers Park, San Diego, CA

CAMP OBJECTIVES: Like the Colts, the Chargers are a reigning division champion that simply doesn't have a lot of pressing issues heading into camp. Offensively, the most significant position to watch is probably at backup running back, as Michael Turner (Falcons) is gone and Darren Sproles and rookie Jacob Hester (LSU) are among those trying to pick up the slack. With Nick Hardwick (foot) expected to miss training camp, the club is relying on veteran Jeremy Newberry (Raiders) to stay healthy and take his place. On defense, the four-game suspension that Stephen Cooper faces due to his positive steroid test means that veteran newcomer Derek Smith (49ers) or the blossoming Anthony Waters will have to emerge during camp as an opening day inside linebacker. First-round draft choice Antoine Cason (Arizona) will battle holdover Paul Oliver for nickel cornerback duties.

PRESEASON SCHEDULE:

Aug 9 - vs. Dallas, 10:00 PM Aug 16 - at St. Louis, 8:00 PM Aug 25 - vs. Seattle, 8:00 PM Aug 29 - at San Francisco, 10:00 PM
