National Hockey League Playoff Game Capsules

POSTED: 7:51 pm PDT April 14, 2007

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Brendan Shanahan scored the game-winning goal late in the third period, lifting the New York Rangers over the Atlanta Thrashers, 2-1, in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series at Philips Arena. Sean Avery scored and also assisted on the game-winning tally for the Rangers, who lead the best-of-seven series two games to none. It's the first time since 1983 that New York won the first two games of a playoff series when on the road. Henrik Lundqvist was spectacular between the pipes for the Rangers. He stopped 27-of-28 shots, including 11 in the final period. Ilya Kovalchuk had the lone tally for the Thrashers, while Johan Hedberg finished with 37 saves. In a surprise move, Atlanta went with Hedberg after starting netminder Kari Lehtonen didn't perform well enough on Thursday night to stay on the job. Hedberg had started just 16 regular-season games, and only two of his nine wins came against teams that reached the playoffs. Game 3 moves to Madison Square Garden in New York on Tuesday.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 4, Ottawa 3

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Sidney Crosby scored the go-ahead goal with 8:16 remaining in the third period as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Ottawa Senators, 4-3, in Game 2 in their Eastern Conference quarterfinals series at Scotiabank Place. The best-of-seven series is now tied 1-1 with Game 3 scheduled for Sunday in Pittsburgh. Crosby also added an assist in the game. Gary Roberts chipped in with a goal and an assist and the Pens also got tallies from Ryan Whitney and Jordan Staal. Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson each had a goal and an assist for the Senators and Chris Kelly also lit the lamp in defeat. Marc-Andre Fleury was brilliant in net, stopping 34-of-37 shots, including a 12-of-13 in the third period. Ray Emery made 17 saves for the Senators.

Final Score: Tampa Bay 3, New Jersey 2

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Vincent Lecavalier's early third period goal lifted the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Martin St. Louis also scored while Brad Richards contributed two assists for the Lightning, who evened the best-of-seven series at a game apiece. Tampa Bay goaltender Johan Holmqvist, who allowed five goals in Game 1, bounced back nicely from his rough start and turned aside 34 shots in the victory. Jamie Langenbrunner had a goal and an assist for the Devils, who won the opening game of the series on Thursday. Martin Brodeur allowed all three goals on 20 shots in the loss. The series now shifts to Tampa Bay with Game 3 scheduled for Monday evening at St. Pete Times Forum.

Final Score: NY Islanders 3, Buffalo 2

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Rick DiPietro returned to action and he stopped 32 shots to help the New York Islanders to a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals at HSBC Arena. DiPietro returned to the ice for the first time since March 25, as he was suffering from post-concussion syndrome. He was cleared to play by doctors after Game 1 on Thursday and was a game-time decision for Game 2. He proceeded to make several big saves throughout the game and help the Islanders bounce back from a 4-1 loss in Game 1 and even the seven-game series, 1-1. The teams will head to Long Island for the next two matchups and Game 3 is scheduled for Monday evening at Nassau Coliseum. Marc-Andre Bergeron scored the go-ahead goal and Trent Hunter and Bruno Gervais each lit the lamp for the Islanders. Tom Poti added two assists. Dmitri Kalinin and Toni Lydman each had a goal for the Sabres, who went 0-for-5 on the power play. Ryan Miller made 29 saves in the loss.
