DELANO, Calif. -- As ABC23 continues with stay-cation ideas for the month of July, our travels have taken us Delano.ABC23 had a chance to explore the Kern National Wildlife Refuge. Workers there said Monday families can learn and have fun at the same time.Just off Higheay 155 to the west of Delano lies a protected home for water fowl.
Jihadda Govan is a manager for the refuge. She said the refuge has been there for nearly 50 years, but many people still don't know it's open all week and free to the public. The refuge offers a 6 1/2 mile, self-guided tour.Govan said during the summer months, visitors can see coyotes, snakes, and hawks, but the real beauty comes in the winter months when the water in the ponds rise. The California aqueduct fills the ponds on the 11,000-acre refuge, but when the sun goes up the water goes down.Govan said no matter when you come, bring a lunch and enjoy your day.
