DELANO, Calif. -- For many people, Lake Woollomes is a place to enjoy an afternoon picnic, but to the disabled, a picnic can turn into quite a journey if there is no wheelchair access.Cesar Navejar said a few months ago, his family set up their picnic at the lake, but his 76-year-old disabled uncle could not make his way to the area because a wire cable closed off all near by entrances.Navejar said he contacted the Americans with Disabilities Association who told him that there must be a wheelchair entrance every 150-200 feet.
He said they had to wheel his uncle much farther than that to get him to their picnic area, but the worst part was the embarrassment his uncle went through. The Kern County Parks Department said they are aware of the issue and are looking into it.Navejar said he'll keep trying to bring about change to the lake until it is accessible for everyone.
